I haven't been to a meeting in 19 months but they always announced "we have a new brother or sister...". I do know that the numbers have gone down. You use to be able to count on 1% of the attendance getting baptized, not so in our area which is the NE.

"We have NO idea how many in our congregation were baptized last year."
by NeverKnew inwas i lied to?.
are the members of a congregation even mildly aware of how many people who belong to their very own congregation were recently baptized?

Welcome Bluebluff, you sure have a lot on your plate. There are so many support avenues out there for the Ex-JW community and also the gay community. Try to make friends outside the religion so you have the support when you finally leave. Confronting your parents will be difficult especially about being gay because of their religious stand. One of my sisters is gay so I know the struggles she has had to go through but one thing I do know is that they have a great community and they really support each other. I also am able to freely talk to her and I am so glad that it is getting better for the gay community, it still is not where it should be. Hang in there! You are on the ride of your life but you are also headed for freedom. someone is always here if you need to talk.

Wifey is getting into audiobooks...
by Captain Obvious inso i'm a huge audible fan.
i'm always plowing through an audiobook about history, religion, science or money.
imo, no one could ever read/listen to my library and continue to be religious or ignorant of natural history.

This may not work for you but I was reading books about North Korea, FLDS, Amish and Scientology and it made me realize the JW's were very simular (cult). Then I read the books on JW's and was able to get my husband to read it by telling him things I was learning. We both came out together 19 months ago.
When I was telling my husband things I had read he would give me the canned answers and I came back to him with "that is exactly what they said you would say". It made him want to prove me wrong so he said let me read the book. It worked for me.

I want my donations back!
by Hortenzie ini want to ask wt for my donations back.
i live in canada and i have income tax receipts from them so i can prove how much i gave them.... anybody ever tried something like that or heard about somebody doing it?
what approach should i take?.

Let us know if you are able to get anything back. I would be very surprised if you are successful because I have read accounts of JW's lending the WTS temporary money with the notion that when they ask for it the WTS will send it back. When they asked for it back the WTS said it was a donation and wouldn't return the money. I can't remember if he sued them and what the outcome was.
I too would love to have my time back and the money. We gave a lot and my husband spent years on the RBC and he was one of the 5 or so men on the committee so he spent many hours doing plans and ordering materials. We also supplied some materials. Oh how mad I get when I realized we were slave labor and they were using us.

Thirty Years a Watch Tower Slave
by Londo111 ini just finished reading this and enjoyed it.
however, if i was newly awakening or on the verge of awakening, i dont think this book would have helped me a great deal.
brother schnell has some good thoughts, however, he is short on detail and description, and even shorter on proof and documentation.. it is interesting reading about the transition of the bible students from a small group of independent noncomformists into an organization characterized by total conformity.

I also read the book but it wasn't one of my favorite books. Some of it was interesting but I am glad I read other books first.

It is amazing what leaving will do for you on so many levels. You look much happier and relaxed. For some people it is very hard on your health. I just showed my husband, family and friends my before cult picture, one while I was in when I was the most depressed and sick and then what I look like today. My husband cried when he saw what it did to me and the others were shocked. i am so thankful I am out!

How do JWs Not see how barbaric YHWH is? Its what started my awakening.
by BU2B inif one reads genesis from the first chapter through the end with an open mind, it is clear that not only is it not true, but that god is potrayed as a cruel, petty, childish micromanaging tyrant.
if one continues reading the ot this is just further solidified.
how do jws not see the obvious?

I find this topic very interesting. I remember many times being upset by the actions of "Jehovah" and I voiced it a few times. I always got the same pat answers but I honestly think in my sub conscience I knew things weren't right. I hardly ever prayed because it just never felt right and of course you always blame it on yourself but he did not make me feel warm and fuzzy at all.
I really liked the points a AndDontCallMeShirley made on this thread and also what BU2B posted.

How many in the cong visited you when you started fading
by joe134cd ini'm just curious speaking from a person who has stopped going to meetings.
i have heard reports from inactive ones (or from ones who the elders suspect of going to the dark side) of having so many visits from elders (cong members) that it got to the point of harassment.
surprisingly i have to say from personal experience and from numerous others that i have spoken to that the exact opposite has been the case.

That is crazy! It is freeing to not see them around.

Steve: no I didn't bury her in my back yard I took her out in the woods! Just kidding, lol. Your question really made me laugh.
We have so many congregations in our area and the weird thing is I never see JW's at all. I go out shopping and run errands and it has been at least 6 months since I saw one. we walked away so I am not sure if they see me and run in the other direction. Even our neighbor is one and I just see him occasionally. He isn't a strong one and he would never talk about the religion or pry into our business
